Forbidden Fruit

So what was really the forbidden fruit?

If yielding to temptation was the thing

That caused the grief of losing paradise

Then I would bet on apricot or peach

Or pear instead of apple. These are fruits

That overwhelm the senses they’re so good.

But not the supermarket kind of fruit;

You need the dead ripe fruit you pick yourself.

A pear, the experts say, should ripen in

The frig. “Pick it green and wait a week

Or two before you eat it. Otherwise

The fruit won’t last.” They’re right. When it’s dead ripe

It seldom lasts to make it to the house.

Sun warmed, melting flesh dribbles down your chin.

When you are finished lick your sticky hands

Before you chose another for dessert.

We all are children when the fruit is ripe,

And can’t resist temptation any more

Than Eve or Adam could in Paradise.
