A Piece of Wood

A piece of wood’s not just a piece of wood.

A broken stick can beat the drums of hope,

Conduct a philharmonic orchestra,

Or catch a salmon from a raging stream.

It can be finer than Damascus steel

Dispatching pirates, enemies with ease.

A piece of wood’s not just a piece of wood.

It holds within itself the fall of man

And Eden’s loss. It is a bloody cross

And also comfort on a summer day.

Utilitarian, it stirs the pot.

In a basilica it stirs the soul.

A piece of wood’s not just a piece of wood.
